Vijaya Mehta is one of the prominent names in Marathi films & theatre. Born Vijaya Jaywant on 4 Nov, 1934, she passed away recently, 30 June 2026. She was an actor & director in many films in Parallel cinema.
Best known for her acclaimed role in the film ‘Party’ 1984 & her directorial ventures, Rao Saheb (1986) & Pestonjee (1988 ).
She was founder member of Mumbai based theatregroup, Rangayan, with playwright Vijay Tendulkar & actors Arvind Deshpande & Shriram Lagoo.She became a leading figure in the experimental Marathi Theatre of the 1960s.
1975 Sangeet Natak Akademy award, 1985 Asia Pacific film Festival, best actress ‘Party’, 1986 National Film award for best supporting actress ‘Rao Saheb’ & 1987 Padmashri.
At the age of 91 she passed away. A gracious exit.
