I had been suggested this title ages ago. But I just got around it. The first episode is superb. A box of tissues wasn’t enough. Prejudide against a ‘girl’, it is a thing of the past? No. I find people with the same mindset.
An officer, male generates respect naturally but a woman has to slog twice as much. An heir to non exsistant estate is cherished but the girl is frowned on.
Equal education to all, but is it is a question of fees, the parents think twice. Exposed to so many parents in my 30 years of service I exactly know how they will react.
Putting or enrolling a boy in English medium & the girl in vernacular is done routinely. Anne was or written ages ago yet very little has changed.
When Mattew falls sick, Anne accompanies Mari , plus she has to show she is good at numbers. When old objects are sold, Anne is accompanied by Jerry. Of couse the rough terrain & the highway robbers are a threat.
When can women live freely as they wish & go out at all times ? I believe the restrictions should be for all, if a girl has to be home by seven why should the boys hang out after ? I am not one of the stern feminist but I find rules a tad unjust for girls.
Having said that I have also seen girls or women use the weakling card. They are going to the other end. They need to be heard but it has to be just & not because she is a woman!
The recent incident where the girl pushed her would be because she did not want to marry him. Ok she could not convince or confront her parents but the boy, she could have told him directly.
Killing someone is never the solution. What about that boy who helped her ? Did he think they would live peacefully & forget the murder?
Education to all. Anne is intelligent. She remembers everything she reads. But if she were dumb? Would she be appreciated? She has experience to deal with situations & people. She has presence of mind.
But school is a task with bullies & prejudices around. If she is an orphan is it her fault? Gilbert sympathises with her & percieves her as a healthy competition. A silver lining to the dark clouds!
It is a wonderful tale & as the critics say the best adaptation of a story. A few points added without losing the flavor.
