It is a Japanese manga series written & illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. The series has been serialised biweekly on Shueisha ‘s Shonen Jump + application & website since March 2019.
An anime TV series adaptation produced by Wit Studio & Clover works premiered on TV Tokyo & its affiliate stations in April 2022. The second half aired from Oct -Dec 2022. A second season premiered in Oct. 2023 & an anime film titled ‘Spy x family Code :White will be released in Dec , 2023.
The story follows a spy who has to ‘build a family’ to execute a mission. Not realizing that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.
The anime received high ranking since it’s release. It’s debut episode was the second most watched in Japanese streaming site. The series took second place in April & later rose & remained in the first place for the next three months.
In a survey conducted by Fin T, Spy x family and Anya were ranked first & fourth respectively, on the top trending things among Generation Z in Japan for 2022. In the same survey, ‘Anya likes peanuts’ was the number 1 trending phrase of the year.
In 2022, Spy x family won in the anime category while Anya Forger voice actress Atsumi Tanezaki won the voice actor category of the Yahoo! Japan Search awards.
Starting to watch the series I did not realize I had watched ten in a row! The illustrations are good. The story gripping & what the critics lauded for is the facial expressions reveal what the characters are feeling. It gives a unique experience.
Basically I am not into anime but I am a new convert after ‘My Happy Marriage’. The premise is different but the strong story-line is same. The characters grow on you.
