It is a drama limited series by Shonda Rhimes. It is a prequel spin off of the Netflix series Bridgerton. It focuses on young Queen Charlotte ‘s rise to prominence & power. It premiered on May 4, 2023 & has six episodes.
It consists of two plotlines. One in the present of Bridgerton beginning with the death of the Royal heir Princess Charlotte that causes the queen to pressure her children for a Royal heir. The other begins with Charlotte meeting & marrying King George. Their marriage & his mental illness.
India Amarteifio as the young Queen Charlotte is superb. She portrays the 17 year old who gets married to a stranger. Her brother has fixed the alliance. Political in nature later it blooms into a love story unparalleled.
She has brought all the emotions of a adolescent revolting against the system. Trying to jump the garden wall she meets George who is direct & asks her if jumping over the wall is worth it.
After meeting him she reconsiders to find herself alone on the wedding night. He is in Kews & she is alone in the huge Buckingham palace. She visits him & comes across the observatory. She is relieved to see him alone but muses if she would have been delighted had he visited a brothel.
Naive & natural she wins over her husband to come to the palace. Enduring her hurt for days when she decides to take matters in her own hands, is when we know she is different. Not given to whining she expresses herself freely.
She makes a bosom friend, Lady Danbury, who was her lifelong friend, during this period. Sharp tongued, witty she was one of the best companions.
It maintains the same flair & flavour of the series.
