Indian Matchmaking

Season 3 ends with a filmy scene ‘Marry Me’. Arti Lalwani gets proposed by her boyfriend Jamal near the waterfront with candles, balloons & a huge diamond ring. Seema aunty had given her a couple of suitable matches but this boy Arti found on a dating app.

Seema’s Tarot reader & Pandit Ji had predicted that both Priya & Arti have a chance. Priya gets her date meet her girlfriends at home. But she is still in two minds. Seema aunty is in this business since 2005.

She believes in destiny & wants to make two people happy. She has complete support from her husband. When a couple of projects did not go well, she had thought of stopping altogether. But her husband said ‘a 100 people are waiting for you, how can you stop with a failure or two?’

She got married & lived in Mumbai. But came to Nasik for 6 years. Stayed & still remembers them as her golden years. Her Ritu was born & uncle aunty from Nasik helped out. Today they are no more. Seema aunty had tears in her eyes as she became nostalgic. In am ice cream parlour both remised about the past.

Peeping in her family of two daughters, a son-in-law, a grand daughter was nice. Also she visited her sister, Sandhya, who just loves what her sister does & is very proud of her.

In an interview with Cyrus broacha, Taparia said the show was born out of a documentary ‘A Suitable Girl’ which was made by US based filmmaker Jagmohan Mundra after his daughter Smriti Mundra decided to document Taparia’s matchmaking process.

The documentary won at Tribeca film festival in New York & it caught attention of Netflix which approached Taparia to host a show on the same concept. After the show aired, Taparia received 5000 daily calls for matchmaking services.

Seema Taparia told Cyrus, ‘I never dreamt the show would go across the world. The show aired on 17th July & I started getting calls from 18th July. 5000 phone calls daily! It even crashed the internet. For the first time, the share market stopped for 15 minutes. They took my interview at that time. During Covid, there were so many restaurants made with my name…. all free of cost!’

‘It’s such a pleasure to go for weddings because they give me divine blessings’. Cyrus asked if anyone can be a part of the show through her reference, she said, ‘ If I give 50 clients, Netflix take only one. After thoroughly checking their family background ….

Seema aunty charges $1,330 to $8,000 for her services. She also has a website where people can avail her services.

The reviews aren’t very encouraging & yet Netflix decided to drop a season 3 for the viewers. Unless there was a demand why would they go in for a loss? The TRP is good & Seema aunty in demand, what else do we need??

It is as good as any other show on TV. Or OTT.
