A mask in the crowd or a party with masks in films was the occasion. A rarity. But Covid brought us to the realisation that the mask is the preventive measure. Not everybody agrees.
A beautiful article by Binata Fernando in IE brings forth all the emotions of the last two years. Covid it happens to someone else, some family at the outskirts of the city! But when I am involved or my family, it becomes a real threat.
As she went around the famous hospital in Mumbai for the cancer treatment of a family member, she realized why mask up is an essential. Wearing it to prevent outside infection if possible & taking care of the lowered immune system.
I remember a student wearing mask to college a few years ago & found it odd. But he had undergone an operation like transplant & he was taking care! Only celebrities or those who want to be undetected wore masks then.
Of course, cancer patients undergo so many tests & routinely visit the hospital where chances of cross infection are the highest. Plus the tubes in their bodies make it impossible to wear a mask always!!!
Affording a mask is also an issue. N95 masks aren’t cheap & washables are not so reliable! It’s a catch-22 situation! Using police to catch people not wearing masks or helmets is just a waste of time & energy. If the people don’t understand the importance, just let them be. Let them suffer the consequences!
