KS Sethumadhavan made his first film in 1961 in Malayalam, Gnana Sundari, when cinema was just emerging in Kerala. His final film in 1991, Venal Kinavukal he had become one of the figures responsible for Malayalam cinema developing its own idiom.
As Walter Salles says, A Filmmaker can never be distant from his roots, he remained firmly rooted in his land. His films carry the fragrance of his land.He also directed films in Hindi, Tamil & Telugu.
‘Julie’ made in Hindi was critically acclaimed & a commercial hit in 1975. Laxmi got many offers for the remakes. But she declined a few for she wanted people to remember her as the young & beautiful Julie!
‘Yehi Hai Zindagi’ in 1977 made in Hindi starred Sanjeev Kumar, Seema Deo, Ramesh Deo with others. Sanjeev Kumar was nominated for the best actor but lost to Amitabh Bachchan for ‘Amar, Akbar, Anthony’.
He won many national & regional awards for his films in his lifetime. He died in Chennai at the age of 94 on 24 Dec 2021. May his legacy live forever.
