The main purpose of examination is to put the student through the tests. But just as the practice effect in the IQ tests, repeated testing starts giving the practice effect. Then the results cannot be said to be conclusive.
Because there is a term end exam people start studying for the exam & not for studying for study sake. The system has turned them into robots who go through the drill & get a paper as the degree to get the desired job.
But the training never ensures that it trains the person. If he is looking at it from the point of view of evaluation only, how can he really learn. I wonder nowadays if people really wish to learn!
They go schools & colleges because their parents have enrolled them. They meet friends for getting the latest news,in some cases Whats up is as good. It has no voice & you can see or read when you have time. It all boils down to you!!
Every individual hence develops with his or her own needs first, later if any come the needs of others. “Mera to ho gaya, tu tera dekh.” this is the attitude. We tell the students to convey the message, good or bad, they don’t think it is necessary. ‘Woh dekh lega” but how many times we repeat the same thing ??
If a bunch of papers is to be distributed, eg answer sheets, one of them is sure to take one for himself & not bother to pass it on or stack it on the last bench without bothering if the row next to him gets it or not. When someone stands up to say he hasn’t received any, you come to know that it is on the last bench!
Why? When we think of students being GenX what is wrong? I don’t think we are expecting too much! Simple, general things which should come naturally are to be told or made to do..! It doesn’t happen naturally, why?
Getting good marks is the aim but behavior ?? It need not be good, no marks. Yes, we do teach them to work for marks but not only that or have they taken your instructions to a T?? I wonder. There was a time when five marks were reserved for neatness & cleanliness, do we reserve some marks for good behaviour? Being polite & taking care of each other & so on???
Do we deserve such students, who only are transitarily there with you. They don’t even know your name & have much less to do with you?? Maybe it is just someone there to help them pass to the next class..
I think we should take it very positively. It will help us grow without attaching us to the young people we see around us. Let us think they are for say, only one year, these are the marks. Good, Keep it up. The contact ends, just like any contract. No tears & no hard feelings. That should be the attitude! We were brought up with too many emotions… un-necessary in today’s world! Right?!
