Backstreet Rookie

I watched the first episode on Youtube & enjoyed it. The opening sequence shows Ji Chang wook & Kim Yoo jung running towards each other on a street. But he is with a bouquet meant for his girlfriend & she is running to save her friends from bullying. They cross each other on the street.

She gives a backward glance & he is focussed on his path. She fights with the girls holding her two friends. Why always only two? Why not more? A clique of three friends appears to be the norm. The main girl here is Park Jin joo who wants to fight the main lead. I have been watching her from ‘Her Private Life’ & she is adorable. She has a cafe there & advice for Park Min young. In 2020, she worked in both the dramas, ‘Backstreet Rookie’ & ‘It’s okay to not be okay’ where she has a small but significant role.

After the fight the three girls come to the bus stop. It is just outside the cafe where Ji Chang wook is being dumped by his girlfriend. She doesn’t like a dirty boyfriend who has rescued a kitten from the sewers. I really doubt the taste of such a girl who can dump Wook? But then he has a better choice!

The complains of Kim Yoo jung shown chewing her nails, not considered decent in Korea. But she is shown to be a rough character & when nervous who doesn’t play with hands? Each one has some or the other nervous tick. The show is based on the 2016-2017 webtoon Convenience Store Saet byul. The writer Hwalhwasan wanted the girl to look different from the typical softies. If the webtoon was well received why should the viewers have a problem with the honest portrayal ?

I was dismayed that I couldn’t see it on Netflix. But I found the option. Without criticizing let the audience decide. I believe Kim Yoo jung has always been the ‘Korea’s little sister’ when she was the child artist. She wanted to try & break her mould. She wished to try a different genre to test her ability. If a show is stopped in the middle how can we assess?
