Suhani Chandni Raatein …

The song wasn’t great that it should be a masterpiece but it haunts you. I have been humming it for days & wondered where it is coming from & why I am humming it ! It is a song from ‘Mukti’ a Hindi film made in 1977. This song was listed at number 8 on the annual list of Binaca Geetmala.

Suhani Chandni Raatein hame sone nahi deti … Tumhare pyar ki baatein hame sone nahi deti.. the desperation, loss & despair are evident in the lines sung by the husband who returns back to see his wife married to someone & now he has no family.

Tumhari reshmi zulfon me dil ke phool khile the… purani woh mulakate hame sone nahi deti.. now the realization dawns that the relationship was everything & that was the golden period.

Kahi aisa na ho lag jaye dil mein aag pani se… Badal le raasta apna ghataye meherbani se.. Ke yaadon ki ye barsaate hame sone nahi deti… beautiful thought.. He is wrongly accused of murder & family shifts base. On returning back he is shocked to see his family has moved on. His memories are the cause of his anguish.’ Koi lauta de mere beete hue din…’ he cries out but the reality is something else.

The other most popular song of the movie was ‘Lalla lalla lori doodh ki katori.. doodh mein batasha munni kare tamasha..’. by Mukesh. In Antakshari, we would wait for that letter ‘L’ & also the other version, ‘ Jeevan kare tamasha..’ sung later by the protagonist. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
