Govardhan Asrani known professionally as ‘Asrani’ was an Indian actor & film director. His career spanned over five decades. He appeared in over 350 Hindi & Gujarati films. He worked in lead, character, comedic& supporting roles.
Noted for his role as a Jailor in “Sholay’ caricaturing Hitler. ‘Hum Angrezo ke jammane ke jailor hai !’ was so famous. ‘Adhe idhar jao, adhe udar jao. Baki mere piche aao!’
Between 1972 to 1991 he was in 25 films with Rajesh Khanna!
His work with Hrishi da in ‘Guddi’ & ‘Satyakam’ propelled him in the Hindi film industry. Today we cannot think of anybody else doing his role !
As director ‘Chala Murari Hero Banne’ 1977 was a laugh riot. His lead pair with Bindiya Goswami was best. And ……. in the end when another Murari , a newbie arrives in Bombay !
His two films are yet to be released. ‘The Trial’ 2025 season 2 with Kajol in the title role has Asrani as Navroz Electricwala. With a ridiculous white haired wig, he is the experienced lawyer up against Kajol!
He worked till his last breath. A true artist.
