Aamhi Doghi (2018)

Trans. The both of us. It is an Indian Marathi language feminist drama. Starring Mukta Barve, Priya Bapat. Directed by Pratima Joshi. Produced by Puja Chhabria.

It is an adaptation of the short story ‘Paus Ala Motha’ by the late author Gauri Deshpande.

Rated at 7.7

I would not call it a ‘feminist’ film. It explores the delicate bond between a step mother & her daughter. It is an extremely sensitive depiction. Dare I say one the best films, ever ?

This is a second project of the lead actresses after 2010 ‘Aika Dajiba’. My list is ready. I love both of them. They are flawless & this story tells the finer points in life without being overbearing.

After her father dies, the mother comes to Mumbai from Kolhapur to stay with her. Then comes the best part, their relation. Having a preconceived notion of the step mom being cruel & finding this mom different!

The houses, the drapery & the performances excellent!

Who gave that 7.7 ? It should be 10 on 10!

I had seen ‘Doghi’ 1995 . Another beautiful film exploring the bond between two sisters. Renuka Daptardar & Sonali Kulkarni. Written & directed by Sumitra Bhave. It won three awards at the 43rd National Film awards in 1995. It won 9 awards at the 32nd Maharashtra State Film awards in 1996.

The films are good films. Should never be categorized. How can they be feministic ? They don ‘t preach. They don ‘t have a strong male lead because they deal with women issues.
