Aakashi zep Ghere pakhara…

A song by the great Marathi singer Sudhir Phadke from the film ‘Aaram haram Aahe ‘ 1976. On the independence day, 15 August , what would be more relevant??

Aakashi Zep ghe re Pakhara, Fly to the skies, O birdie…

Soodi sonyacha Pinjara , Leave behind the cage…. golden.

Tuj bhovti vaibhav maya, phal rasal milte khaya, sukhlolup zhali kaya, ha kuthvar vedya ghesi aasra… The happiness engulfs you, ripe fruits are offered to you.

Body is used to the comforts, but for how long are you going to be appeased ???

Ghar kasle hi tar kara, vesha saman moti chara, mohache bandan dwara , tuj aadvito ha kaisa umbara …. this is not home but a jail, your food is poison, it is the bindings of ‘moha’ or attachment. The threshold should not bind you here!

Tu pankh dile devane, kar vihar samarthyane, dari dongar hirvi raane, ja olanduniya sarita sagara…

God has gifted you wings, take flight, valleys, mountains, the green fields…Fly across the rivers & the oceans…

Are n’t we all like this birdie ?? We have the ability & yet hesitate to take the leap! On the day of independence let’s think of being independent !

Shrug off the lethargy & leap forward.

On our journey , ahead.
