Movies, Money, Motherhood

Why can’t Bollywood women have it all? asks Alaka Sahani. The recent exit of Deepika Padukone from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film ‘Spirit’ & the comments & observations made by different celebrities on working hours has put a spotlight on issues that are often brushed under the carpet.

Director Kabir Khan asked when top stars like Aamir Khan & Akshay Kumar work an eight hour shift , couldn ‘t the same provision be extended to Padukone ? Commenting on the high remuneration that she was supposedly charging, he said ‘ Deepika consistently pulls crowds, so she rightly commands the fee she does’. Neha Dhupia also posted.

The mindset of the industry, regarding the marriage of a female star was considered as a set back, weakening their star power. Motherhood is the other dreaded M word. Perceived as reducing the value of a female star who are under constant pressure to be ‘objects of desire’.

Many have left early or accepted character roles. Some chose to be ‘mothers’ to their male stars. Elderly male star , in his 40s could romance with a sweet 20 something. The society accepts that easily.

After marriage or having affairs is okay for him. The bias is not only regarding the salary they command but many perks enjoyed by them.

Kiara Advani showed off her baby bump earlier at her MET gala debut but had bowed out of Farhan Akhtar’s next film, Don 3, making way for Sharvari Wagh.

Change is building, one woman at a time. Kareena, Aliya normalised working while pregnant. Aliya worked in ‘Heart of Stone’ then. Watch her in her latest, there are no signs. She is disciplined & remained the same. Maintained.

Padukone wants to have more time with her daughter, Dua, so what is wrong? As a mother, her priorities have changed as they should.

The question is , when are we going to support her ? And her likes ??
