‘Berusaiyu no Bara’ It is a Japanese animated romantic film. It is based on the 1972 manga by Riyoko Ikeda. Directed by Ai Yoshimura . Written by Tomoko Konparu. The film stars the voices of Miyuki Sawashiro, Aya Hirano, Toshiyuki Toyonaga & Kazuki Kato.
In the late 18th century, four people : Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, a general who is a woman raised as a son, Marie Antoinette, the daughter of Austrian Empress who is destined to become a queen, Andre Grandier, Oscar ‘s childhood friend & Hans Axel von Fersen, a Swedish aristocrat, meet in Versailles, France & live their respective destinies while being tossed by the tides of the era.
Released in Japan on January 31, 2025. It started streaming on Netflix on April 30, 2025.
Richard Eisenbeis of Anime News Network gave the film a B+ rating & stated ‘watching this new adaptation of ‘The Rose of Versailles’, it’s easy to see why this story captivated audiences five decades ago, it still does today’
The story is relevant & the rebellion comes towards the end. The two roses : Oscar & Marie have our attention throughout. The colours may be jarring at times.
Oscar being a woman admires Marie for her grace & kind nature. Being given the duty to protect her, she does it till the end. Andre & then Oscar die before the end of the revolution.
In the shortest possible time all the characters have been given justice.
