‘I can do much more than anybody else’

Masaba Gupta has never been shy of taking life head on. She confidently speaks her mind. Her mother, the veteran actor, has never shielded her from any of the events in her own life.

In the Netflix show, ‘Masaba Masaba ‘2020 Masaba was trully herself. Her character decides to break up, she does it, in the very first episode. Then decides to freeze her eggs or the fashion designer’s own signature collection of bold prints on kaftans & saries. She does that naturally. Without drama or thinking about it for long.

Now in her debut on the silver screen in Kesari Chapter 2 : the Untold story of Jallianwala Bagh, she invokes the cabaret dancer within. In the song ‘Khumaari’ backed by Kavita Seth’s vocals, she channels Catherine Zeta -Jones in ‘All That Jazz (Chicago , 2012) & manifests Samantha Ruth ‘s Oo Antava (Pushpa: The Rise , 2021). She brings out the subtle sensuality of the 1920s.

Devansh Sharma in his interview writes about how she bagged the dance number, her mother’s reaction & what is her game changing strategy. The casting director called up a week before her wedding in 2023 . Being a dancer she said yes.

She rehearsed for two & a half days. She enjoyed the slow dance. Elegance & grace that brings sensuality to life. Her looks are unique. She is aware.

If it is a disadvantage, she wants to turn it into a big opportunity. One, I don’t look like anybody. Two, I can do much more than anybody else. Three, I believe that I may not get 10 commercial paets but I will get one meaningful part. Like this song, which was barely 60 secs , but it will make an impact in a two & a half hour film.

Her agenda while doing ‘Masaba Masaba ‘ was to never look at the length of the role. That has been a game changer. Now, she is more open to do things differently.

She loves ‘Pinga’ by Priyanka & Deepika in ‘Bajirao Mastani (2015). A beautiful dance form. It is the same with ‘Dola re dola’ ( Devdas, 2002 ). Katrina Kaif’s Chikni Chameli’ ( Agnipath, 2011). People forget the arts have a certain entertainment value. I would never stand for objectifying women. ‘Khumaari’ is about lost love & longing. It is so beautiful.

Neena Gupta was shocked. When did you do this, how did you do this & what’s happening. But she was happy because she knew I would dance. It was shot in the pre-pregnancy.

Serena Williams also won her games when she was due.

These girls are talented, tough & tenacious. They know what they want in life! Looking at their confidence makes my day!!!
