It is a British TV psychological crime drama. Created by Jack Thorne & Stephen Graham. Directed by Philip Barantini. Starring Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters, Faye Marsay, Mark Stanley with others.

It centers on a 13 year old school boy named Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper ) who is arrested after the murder of a girl in his school.

Each of its four episodes was shot in one continuous shot. Episode deals with the police raiding the Miller house & arresting Jamie. Episode 2 three days after the police duo cisit the school in search of more information. They interview a couple of students. Episode three It is seven months after the murder. Forensic psychologist Briony Ariston meets with Jamie. If we consider this the highlight of the show, the fourth is the cherry on the cake! Episode 4 : Thirteen months after the murder, Millers attempt to go back to normality as Jamie awaits trial. The parents blaming themselves for not being vigilant.

Filming locations included South Kirby , South Elmsall & Sheffield in Yorkshire. Minsthorpe Community College in South Elmsall was used as a location for the school scenes in ‘Episode 2’. A specially constructed film set at the Production Park studio facility in South Kirkby was used for the complexities of single-shot filming.

Released on 13 March 2025. Critically acclaimed for direction, writing & cinematography, with special attention paid to its atmosphere & performances.

On 9 April 2025, Deadline reported that Netflix & Plan B Entertainment were in talks about a second season of the series.

It was originally conceived by Stephen Graham as a response to cases of knife crime by teenagers in the United Kingdom, including the murders of Ava White & Elianne Andam. He decided to create a drama exploring the motivation of extreme acts of violence against girls by young boys, & collaborated with screen writer Jack Thorne.

Jack stated that no part of the story is based on a specific true story. In an interview he said the two writers wanted to ‘look in the eye of modern male rage’ & examine the influence of public figures such as Andrew Tate on boys.

Owen Cooper was cast in the lead with no previous professional acting experience. Watch him in the first frame as he gets arrested. His expression is so raw. No acting here. Also next when he is being taken to the police station, his face is never seen. Back of his head, his fists banging the window pane. No words.

He was selected from 500 boys by casting director Shaheen Baig. She watched the demo tape & he got the role.

Graham said each episode took three weeks in total. The series was not shot in chronological manner. Cooper’s first day on the set was shooting episode 3. I would say the best! His interaction with the psychologist is one to look out for!

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 9.4/10. ‘Adolescence is a masterclass in televisual storytelling & a searing viewing experience that scars’ Metacritic gave it a score of 91/100. indicating ‘universal acclaim’.

The show was made free for viewing in UKsecondary schools after Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s backing.

I remember one of my friends saying that she would never buy a TV. She believed it de sensitizes ‘death’ or ‘struggle’ that the protagonist goes through. But this can’t be the solution. How can she bar him from watching TV at his friend’s ???

Today every child has a mobile. It has every thing under the sun. We have taught our children . They know what is right & what is wrong! But the information explosion, the sexual content & unknown threats are innumerable.

We cannot watch a child 24/7 & yet we need to watch out for any signs. As for a disease, there are symptoms. The mother says he was hooked to his computer. She had seen a light on at 1 am. The next day he should have been questioned.

Revolting is their way. They don’t like questions. But a gentle but firm query is necessary. 13, but it’s thirteen!! The key word here is ‘teen’!!! He thinks he knows it all yet he is a child!

The discussion can go on for ages, This ‘twilight’ phase is the best phase in a human’s life. But reaching the top means nurturing it to scale the dizzy heights. We find the talented have given us gems at this stage.

A new treatment. book, classic in literature or any advances in science & technology have come from raw talent… the teenagers or the post teenage stge. We need to care more them. Instead of the grown up pangs they need to grow up first into healthy individuals…..physically & psychologically.

I had to teach a paper ‘Adolescence’. I had a few points & remember going parch throated. I had so much to talk about! So many examples to illustrated.
