The film received mixed reviews from critics. They praised the leads but criticised the screenplay, especially it’s pace & predictability.
Three people witness their world’s collide during a legendary international cricket test match in Chennai. Meanwhile, they struggle as they have to make some tough decisions.
The genesis of the film came from an interview given by Virat Kohli, who stated that his father died when he was 18 years old, yet he still played for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy match. Shashikanth recalled that the interview opened the perspective of what happens when a cricketer enters into the arena, adding ‘it’s something like a superhero story arc that he is willing to sacrifice all those personal bits for something much higher. Those decisions make you the hero or villain.’
Despite this, it achieved high viewership. Sonal Pandya of Times Now gave it a 3.5/5 stars & wrote ‘ Test is lengthy but intriguing thriller focused on a couple backed into the tightest corner.
Goutham of Pinkvilla gave it 2.5/5 stars. Sudhir Srinivasan of Cinema Express rated it at 2.5/5 stars & wrote, ‘ Test explores ambition, obsession & morality- but in it’s struggle to create emotional intimacy, it leaves us at a distance. This is a film rich in ideas but curiously hollow in feeling’.
R. Madhavan had rejected the role as he thought it will not suit him but accepted the offer after percieving Shashikanth’s vision.
Siddharth underwent a nine month training. He dedicated the role to Rahul Dravid. Nayanthara was able to connect with the role of a woman longing for a child , being a mother herself. She looks fab with her cotton saries. As a teacher she stretches herself, much beyond that.
The actors have done a fabulous job. They have made the people come alive on screen.
