Thandel (2025)

Lit. Captain of the boat. It is an Indian Telugu language romantic action thriller film. Written & directed by Chandoo Mondeti. It stars Naga Chaitanya & Sai Pallavi.

The film is based on a real life incident that occurred in 2018, depicting how Pakistani forces captured a fisherman from Srikakulam in Inter-national waters.

It is a mix of a sweet love story, a gripping survival tale, a touch of patriotism. A beautiful experience.

Released on 7 Feb.2025. Netflix bought the rights for Rs 40-45 crores & streamed it from 7 March 2025. Made on a budget of Rs 75 crores, it garnered Rs 100 crores. Major portions of the film were shot in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam & Udupi.

The leads have worked together earlier in the 2021 drama, Love story.

A dance sequence in the film on Lord Shiva, when Raju becomes the Thandel, ‘Namo Namah Shivaya’ was shot with a budget of Rs 4 crores. 900 trained dancers worked for the song. It is the highlight of the film. The music , dance , choreography are top notch. –

The critics gave mixed reviews praising the leads performance, visuals & soundtrack but the narration received criticism.

It is the fourth highest grossing Telugu film of 2025 as well as the tenth highest grosser Indian film of 2025.

When Raju goes missing & is captured in Pakistan, Satya fights for the pending salaries from the owner in Gujrat. Later she goes to Delhi & requests Swaraj. Just when the release order is in place , it meets another obstacle.

The girl running from pole to post is akin to Madhu in ‘Rosa’ where she had to free her husband from the terrorists!

They are not married , yet. There is another young man who is waiting for her, helping her. The circumstances unfair. Till the end we are keeping our fingers crossed. In deep waters, on hostile land anything can go wrong.

Sai Pallavi again brings a touching portrayal. Chaitanya comfortable in his role. They compliment each other.

A beautiful film.
