Fried Green Tomatoes (1991 )

It is an American comedy drama film. Directed by Jon Avnet. Written by Flagg & Carol Sobieski. Starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary -Louise Parker, Cicely Tyson.

It is based on Fannie Flagg’s 1987 novel’ Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe’.

The film tells the story of a middle aged housewife, who unhappy with her life, befriends an elderly lady in a nursing home & is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know.

Made on a budget of $ 11 million it garnered $ 119.4 million.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 6.7 /10. Thomas Newman received the Motion Picture Composer award & in 1992, it got the Outstanding Film – Wide release award .

The film caused the fried green tomatoes , food dish to be known as a delicacy of the Southern United States, when previously it did not have such a status.

The friendship & the deep bond that the two female characters share is unique. Were they lovers or lesbians, hardly matters. They stood for each other through thick & thin.

Secondly, Evelyn, an ordinary housewife, hearing Ninni’s story finds inspiration & improves her quality of life. She starts respecting herself. She becomes bold enough to invite Ninni to stay at her place !

The story is good & leaves you spirited.
