Nirbaak (2015)

Trans. Speechless ,is an Indian Bengali language drama film. Directed & written by Shrijit Mukherji. Starring Sushmita Sen, Jisshu Sengupta, Ritwick Chakraborty & Anjan Dutt.

This is the first Bengali film for Sushmita Sen.

The film was released in Kolkata on 1 May 2015. Rest of India on 15 May 2015.

The story has parts. Affection: The protagonist is schizophrenic & has multiple personality disorder. He reads a book ‘Make Yourself Unforgettable’ on a bench in the park. Sushmita is also a regular & converses with him. She tries to share her own grief.

Their conversation is inaudible but at the end he advices ‘Love Yourself’ & leaves. Next day he slips in his bathtub & is being taken to the hospital.

Lust : Sushmita lives in Kolkata & doesn’t wish to leave it for the sake of her boyfriend. The tree is the protagonist developing feelings for her. Her boyfriend wins her sitting on that bench under the tree. The tree is looking at them.

The night she decides to live with him, a cyclone strikes & the tree is shown with it’s branches broken & scattered.

Jealousy: Jisshu’s female dog , Bingi does not accept Sushmita moving with him. She considers her as a rival. Bingi attacks Sushmita. They decide to leave her at Jisshu’s mother’s. Jisshu is driving, Bingi tries to flee , causing an accident. Sushmita dies. Jisshu goes in coma & Bingi remains unscathed.

Love : Ritwick is a caretaker of a morgue. He is in love with Sushmita’s dead body. The day she is about to be taken from the morgue by her relatives, some goons come. They tell Ritwick to leave the group leader with one of the bodies. He protests. As he is mercilessly beaten, close of Sushmita shows her smiling.

Separation : Ritwick is now dead & is being set in the morgue as Sushmita’s body is being taken out, depicting the sense of separation between the two dead people.

It is visually stunning. But all the stories are depressing. Even if sad some light should be there at the end of the tunnel!

I don’t relish tragedies & feel one should feel positive at the end of the film. I have known Bengali directors being subtle , sensitive & somber. Not bang in your face. I have grown with Basu Chatterji, Basu Bhattacharya, Hrishi da, Gulzar & Satyajit Ray, Priyadarshan.
