At it’s core , Sangeet Manapman is a tale of pride & prejudice, exploring the dynamic relationship between Dhairyadhar , a principled commander & Bhamini, a proud young woman.
It is a story by Krishnaji Prabhakar Khadilkar in 1911. The story has transcended itself over the decades without credit. Recent example being Bahubali. One can easily recall hundreds of Hollywood, Bollywood movies made on the same theme.
Bhamini’s father, the commander-in-chief has his eyes on the new talent, Dhairyadhar. He proposes his daughter’s hand in marriage. Bhamini is hurt. She wasn’t consulted first. She refuses. She decides to find fault with him, herself.
She disguises as a commoner, Vanmala & goes to work with his troops. There she meets the man & falls for him. What her father had perceived comes true! But at her own terms.
The musical is brought to the silver screen. It has flaws but it is a delight to watch. I loved the beautiful experience. A sea change from all the lovey dovely stuff. If you know the songs all the better.
