Notebook (2019)

It is an Indian Hindi language romantic drama film. Directed by Nitin Kakkar. Produced by Salman Khan. Starring Zaheer Iqbal. Pranutan Bahl.

It is a remake of the 2014 Thai film ‘The Teacher’s Diary’ by Nithiwat Tharathorn.

Notebook tells the story of a young retired army officer who joins his father’s school as a teacher to save it from closure. He falls in love with the previous teacher after reading through her memorabilia left behind in the drawers.

The film was released on 29 March 2019. Made on a budget of Rs 15 crore, it garnered est. Rs 3.72 crores.

It received mixed response from critics with praises for the leads performances. Rotten Tomatoes has given it a rating of 4.2/10. Saying unremarkable lead pair, most ravishing views of Kashmir, a bunch of adorable children & a soundtrack with a few good tunes. ‘Bumro’ or ‘Main Taare’, ‘Nai Lagda’ bring a smile to the faces.

As the reviews say the leads hardly share the screen & the story is antiseptic. Without meeting, they could have portrayed the waiting better.

It does make you think of the state of education. The Kashmir situation has been well portrayed. But the solution remains to be found. How are the bunch of children cope up with their further studies ??

The Thai film is based on a real life teacher of a houseboat school, Ban Ko Allocated school ( Ruen Phae Branch ) on the Ping river at the Bhumibol Dam in Mae Ping National Park in Li District, Lamphun province.

The motif of a left behind diary in that film is based on an incident from the marriage of a producer’s friend.

The name ‘The Notebook’ 2004 American drama , comes to mind. It is based on 1996 novel by Nicholas Sparks. It became a cult classic. Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling got many awards.
