It is an Indian Hindi language romantic drama film. Directed by Sajid Ali. Presented by Imtiaz Ali. Co-produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor & Preety Ali. Starring Avinash Tiwary & newcomer Tripti Dimri.
A contemporary retelling of the legendary Arabic tragedy Layla & Majnum, It follows two star crossed lovers, Laila & Qais Bhatt who are unable to unite as they face opposition from their families.
However when fate intervenes, Laila marries another man while Qais goes to London. They reunite after four years, but but end up waiting for each other.
Released on 7 September 2018, it met with lukewarm response & failed at the box office. But in later years, it received positive reviews for it’s story, cast performances & sound track gathering critical acclaim.
It was re-release on 9 August 2024, grossing over Rs 11.5 crore at the box office. Significantly surpassing it’s original collection of Rs 2.18 – 3.25 crores. Following it’s digital release , some outlets even assigned the film cult status.
At Mirchi Music awards, Niladri kumar won the Upcoming Music composer of the year. In 2019, at the 64th Film Fare awards Niladri Kumar won the RD Burman award for Upcoming Talent in Film Music.
Laila is a flirt & likes to tease the boys who are attracted to her. She meets Qais who is smitten. She starts off casually & his talk , persistence win her over. She is again casual about their families’ dispute.
Falling in her father’s feet would do it, she thinks. But things go south & she marries someone of her father’s choice. This tips the balance for Manjnu. He goes to London but is an empty shell.
Set in the scenic Kashmir valley, it brought back memories. Having recently visiting Pehalgam & the clear, rushing river, the tall green trees… our driver had said,’phuloon ke shahar mein hai ghar apna..’ I had envied him instantly. What …to have a house among flowers ?? All kinds & especially the roses in bunches, on boughs anywhere, on the hedge, on the roadside…
What I loved about Avinash Tiwary is that he is flawless. His transition from a carefree , stalker boy to the man running around crazy is astonishing. He has a dialogue ‘Shakal itni acchi nahi hai.’ He is aware he is not good looking . But the heart of gold that he has is nowhere else to be found.
Tripti on seeing his state, says, ‘Tum toh kehtoi thi woh London mein aayashiya kar raha hai.. yeh ssurat aaiyashi karne wale ki hai ?’ You said he is enjoying himself in London. Now, tell me is this the face of the one enjoying?
From there on the tears just wouldn’t stop. Any award for the performance will be the awards’s honor!
Mindblowing.
