In the film, Jesse & Celine meet on a Eurail train & disembark in Vienna to spend the night exploring together.
Made on a budget of $ 2.5 million, it garnered $ 22.5 million. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 1995.
It is critically acclaimed for it’s screenplay, Linklater’s direction & acting performances. It received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes & appeared on many critics lists of the greatest films.
The sequel ‘Before Sunset’ in 2004 & ‘Before Midnight’ in 2013.
Before Sunrise was inspired by a woman named Amy Lehrhaupt, whom director Richard Linklater met in a toy shop in Philadelphia in 1989. They walked around the city together, conversing deep into the night. In 2013, Linklater revealed that she had died in a motorcycle accident before the release of ‘Before Sunrise.’
He wrote the screen play with Krizan in 11 days. Initially he thought Hawke was too young for the part. But then he saw Hawke at a play in New York City & re considered after talking to the actor.
For Celine, Linklater met Julie Delpy & liked her personality. After the final reading, he knew both were right for the role! Today, after watching them we remember them as Jesse & Celine. I have watched them in other films but here, they are not role playing, they are the two strangers getting to know each other.
The film takes place on June 16, Bloomsday. They decide to meet again after 6 months.
At the 45th Berlin International Film Festival, Linklater won the Silver Bear for Best Director.
