Val is the housemaid of a wealthy family in Sao Paulo. It portrays the tensions that arise after her daughter Jessica moves into the family’s house in order to apply for an admission exam at the university of Sao Paulo.
Val, a woman from Pernambuco, moves to Sao Paulo to provide a better life for her daughter, Jessica. Val leaves her daughter with a caretaker while she moves to a different city. She is a live-in housemaid & takes care of the family’s only child, Fabinho. She takes care of him as if he is her son. But her daughter continues to live away & harbors anger towards her mother for being away.
When she comes visiting, she observes how her mother is treated. She refuses to live with her in the cramped up space & moves to the guest room. With the host’s permission, she also has access to all the food.
That visit is an eye opener in all ways. Jessica passes her entrance exam but Fabinho does not. His mother is jealous that Val’s daughter passed. She tells him to study harder for the next year. He decides to take six months off & spend it in Australia.
Val decides to quit her job to be with her daughter. With her daughter she learns she has a grandson, Jorge. Jessica is doing the same thing she did with her! She asks Jessica to bring him over & that she would take care of him.
Being a second mother to a son all her life, now she has a golden opportunity to help her daughter & bring up her grandson!!!
Made on a budget of $ 4 million, it garnered $ 1.3 million in Brazil & a worldwide total of $ 3 million. It Premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival & later released in Brazil. It was critically praised in & outside Brazil. It was the Brazilian entry for the Best foreign Language film at the 88th Academy awards,
In 2015, The Brazilian Film Critics Association voted ‘The Second Mother’ the 71st greatest Brazilian film of all time, in it’s list of 100 best Brazilian films.
