The Man Without a Past (2002 )

( Finnish : Mies vailla menneisyytta ) is a Finnish comedy drama film. Produced, written & directed by Aki Kaurismaki. Starring Markku Peltola, Kati Outinen, Juhani Niemela. It is the second installment in Kaurismaki’s Finland trilogy, the other two films being ‘Drifting Clouds ‘1996 & ‘Lights in the Dusk’ 2006.

A man arrives in Helsinki at night & falls asleep on a park bench. He is assaulted by three criminals. He ends up in coma & is declared dead at the hospital. The doctors leave, he awakens & leaves the hospital in bandages.

The Nieminen family , residing in an abandoned shipping container at the port , discover him by the sea in the morning. They take him in, nurse him back to health, but he has lost his memory, not even recalling his own name.

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for best Foreign language film in 2002 ( the only Finnish Film so far ) & won the Grand Prix at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.

On Rotten Tomatoes it got 7.98/10. The site’s critical consensus reads ,’Kaurismaki delivers another droll comedy full of his trademark humor’.

The humor takes you to an adventure of sorts. He recovers & how! A nice story.
