It is an Indian mystery thriller film. Directed by Shriram Raghavan. The film, a Hindi-Tamil bilingual, stars Katrina Kaif, Vijay Sethupathi, with Ashwini Kalsekar, Luke Kenny & others.
The basic plot of the film was based on Frederic Dard’s French novel ‘Le Monte-charge (Bird in a cage ).
Made on a budget of Rs 60 crores, it garnered Rs 26.02 crores.
The film received positive reviews but bombed at the box office.
The director had considered titles containing the word ‘raat’ (night ) such as ‘Raat akeli hai’, ‘Raat ke Hum safar’,’Baat Ek Raat ki’. But finally ‘Merry Christmas’ was finalised.
The film marks Raghavan’s & Katrina ‘s debut in Tamil cinema. Deepa Venkat dubbed for Katrina ‘s character in the Tamil version of the movie.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 6.5 10 rating. Shubhra Gupta of ‘The Indian Express’ gave it a 3/5. She felt that despite their unusual pairing, Katrina Kaif & Vijay Sethupathi manage to work together.
Devesh Sharma of ‘Filmfare’ summaries it as ‘a dark comedy that will make you smile & scratch your head at the same time…’
It all happens on the Christmas eve. But this Christmas is not’ Merry’ at all. Maybe because I love those mushy Christmas stories… Hallmark style !!!
