It is an Italian period comedy drama film. Co- written & directed by Paola Cortellesi in her directorial debut. It stars Cortellesi, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Emanuela Fanelli ,Valerio Mastandrea with others.
Set in post war 1940s in Italy, it follows Delia breaking traditional family patterns & aspiring to a different future, after receiving a mysterious letter.
It was shot in black -and white in the neorealist style of the 1940s and 50s. Made on a budget of 5 million, it garnered $ 49.5 million.
It became the highest grossing film in Italy in 2023 surpassing ‘Barbie’, the most successful film of the year by the number of tickets sold. The ninth highest grossing film ever in the country, beating ‘Life is Beautiful’ (1997) by Roberto Benigni.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 7.6/10. The critics gave it positive reviews. It received 19 nominations at the 69th David di Donatello & won 6 awards. Best new director & Best Actress for Cortellesi, Best Supporting Actress for Fanelli, Best Original Screenplay, the David youth award & the David Audience Award.
The black & white film rings out the pathos of the woman. Finally, she decides to leave. We are pleasantly surprised by the end. But the end is a new start for her!
