My Name is Sara ( also known as ‘The Occupation’ ) is an American biographical drama. Directed by Steven Oritt. Written by David Himmelstein. It stars Zuzanna Surowy, Eryk Lubos, Michalina Olszanska.
It is based on the life of Holocaust survivor Sara Goralnik.
It was premiered at the Giffoni Film festival on 21 July 2019. Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com rated it 3.5 out of 4 & called it a ‘torment in cinematic form, made engrossing by it’s focus on a singular experience & performance that anchors it’, writing that Surowy ‘has that gift of letting the surroundings & events absorb & reflect her’.
Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times wrote that the film ‘has it’s share of physically & emotionally tough moments’ & called Surowy’ s performance ‘gripping, deeply textured & sympathetic’.
Ben Kenigsberg of The New York Times called the film ‘intermittently powerful if somewhat stiff-jointed’ & wrote that it can be ‘clunkily expository’ & ‘frustratingly vague’.
I believe that is because it is a true story. The difference lies in facts & fiction. Our imagination cannot stop with the screen images.
A very impactful, serious drama.
