My Wife is 18 (2002 )

It is a Chinese film. Language is Cantonese, Mandarine. Made in Hong Kong. Directed by James Yuen. Written by James Yuen, Chan Hing Ga. Starring Charlene Choi, Ekin Cheng.

It was released on 25 Sept, 2002. It is 104 minutes long. A sequel, My Sassy Hubby was released in 2012.

Film begins in London. 30 year old Cheng is facing an interview. 3 women on the panel are asking him about psychology of women. He fails & is seen exiting the university. He decides to continue with the subject but his girlfriend ends the relationship.

He cannot continue with his essay. Meanwhile his mother is putting pressure on him to get married to her friend’s daughter Yoyo. Both dislike the idea but Cheng’s grandmother, 93 years old , wants him to marry too.

So, Cheng is forced to marry Yoyo, who is 18 at the time. They make a contract that they will divorce within a year & no sexual relationship will occur. Yoyo agrees because Cheng is wealthy & she sees it as an opportunity to feed her lifestyle.

Cheng becomes a teacher at her school. Now, she has to hide the relationship from her school & her crush Kelvin.

As life continues, Yoyo finds herself falling in love with Cheng.

It has been years since I saw ‘My Little Bride’. It is the Korean remake of ‘My Wife is 18’. The premise is the same. The grandfather makes the decision. Being cousins, they know each other from childhood. Or was it the boy next door?

Without any explicit scenes, remaining within the framework of the story, the blooming romance is something to look up to.

An enjoyable film.
