It is a French animated film . ( French : Le Tableau ). Directed by Jean-Francois Laguionie. Written by Jean Francois Laguionie , Anik Leray.
For mysterious reasons, a paintor has left a work incomplete, causing conflict between the Toupins, who are entirely painted, the Pafins, who lack a few colors & the Reufs, who are only sketches.
Toupins occupy the Chateau, Pafinis are out in the gardens & Reufs are treated as outcasts & hunted by the Toupins. Three friends one of each class, embark on a quest to find the artist so that he can finish the piece & hopefully unite the people.
The film was co -produced by France’s Blue spirit & Belgium’s Be-films. It took two years to finance & had a budget of four million Euro. Jean Francois designed every character himself. The desins include homages to painters such as Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso & Henri Matisse.
In June 2013, The film won the award for Best Feature film at the 8th Festival of European Animated Feature films & TV specials.
Right from the first frame it doesn’t fascinate. But the paintings start growing on you. As the story unfolds we know it has a deeper meaning than the running around or hunting is going on. The different classes make a real struggle to shift from one to another.
Not for kids. The angles are harsh & so is the story . Made for mature audiences.
