It is a 2014 South Korean drama. Also known as ‘Funeral Singer’ or ‘The Crying Woman’. Directed by Lee Eun Jin. It stars Kim You Jung, Seo Joon Young, Hwang Mi Seon, Son Ji Na, Ahn Ji Hyun, Im Ji Eun.
Yun Shim is a young girl born in a poor family. Her grandmother & mother were Dirge Singers. The lowest class of people paid to attend funerals & mourn for the dead. Yun Shim rebels against her destiny & flees to become a Gisaeng. Thinking that smiling for a living is better than mourning & crying.
She meets Yoon Soo, a young man from a wealthy family, born out of wedlock & looked down upon as a half noble.
Will they be able to change their unfortunate destiny ???
‘Rudaali’ is a 1993 Indian Hindi language film. ‘Rona’ means to cry. These are females who are professional mourners. The film is set in rural part of Rajasthan. Dimple Kapadia assayed the lead role. It won three National awards. It was the Indian entry for best foreign language film at the 66th Academy awards but not nominated.
It brings back so many memories of lost chances.
