It is a 2024 Hindi language romantic sports drama film. Directed by Sharan Sharma. Produced by Zee studios & Dharma Productions. It stars Rajkummar Rao & Janhvi Kapoor.
The film was released on 31 May 2024 to mixed reviews from critics. The film premiered on Netflix from 26 July 2024. Made on a budget of Rs 40 crores it garnered est. Rs. 51.40 crore.
The virtue of an arranged marriage brings together Mahendra, a failed cricketer & Mahima, a doctor. Having the same nickname, Mahi, they together become Mr & Mrs Mahi. ( Akin to the nickname of Mahendra Singh Dhoni).
They soon discover their common love & passion for cricket. Mr Mahi watches his wife smashing sixes , he encourages her to chase her dream of becoming a cricketer. Due to his encouragement, she quits her job & starts training under him.
The film was mostly filmed in Jharkhand, India, the home place of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, since the film is centered around cricket & him. During filming, Kapoor dislocated her shoulder twice.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 5.4 / 10. Shilajit Mishra of The Hindu wrote, it is difficult to concentrate on Mr & Mrs Mahi without being constantly reminded of other films.
Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express rated 2.5/5. ‘The film is giving us a rom com nestled in India’s favourite sport, which in turn is nestled in the tropes of the family entertainer movie.’
The leads are good. A better script would have brought more to the film. Arjit Taneja as Sikander makes a cameo. Zarina Wahab as Rajkummar’ s mother has some good lines.
As the critics say it has it’s moments. But lacks in many areas. The sincere effort gets to you. Many have passion but who really gets a chance!
It’s about getting a second chance in life. Translating your dream to your spouse was laudable.
But it fails to rise to the level of ‘Chak De India’. This one needed more thought & perfection.
A feel good film.
