A Death in the Gunj

It is a 2016 Indian English language drama film. Written & directed by Konkona Sen Sharma. The film features Vikrant Massey, Tillotama Shome, Om Puri, Tanuja, Kalki Koechlin with others.

It was released on 10 September 2016 in Toronto. All of 107 minutes, it keeps you invested. It garnered Rs 13. 7 million.

It was shot in McCluskieganj, Jharkhand, in 6 weeks. It was released on 2 June 2017 & received eight nominations at the 63 rd Film fare Awards. Konkona Sharma for Best debut director, Best Cinematography for Sirsha Roy & Best Costume for Rohit Chaturvedi were the three won.

Nandu, his wife& daughter, with his wife’s friend & his cousin Shutu arrive at Nandu’ s parents house in Mc Cluskieganj from Calcutta. Shutu is shy, gentle & sensitive. In spite of being a topper in school, he has failed his last semester. He misses his father , who has recently passed away.

In the short span he realizes that his world is slowly crashing down. Disappointed, he aims the gun at the old OP , who is teaching him how to hold, load the gun. Om Puri in his final appearance, maybe. This film is dedicated t him.

I am leaving out the spoilers for those who may like a ‘dekho’. Hats off to Konkona, as always. She never disappoints. Would surely like her to work on many more films! A die hard fan here.

A sensitive, thought provoking & grounded film.
