It is a 2018 South Korean TV series. Written By Kim Eun sook & directed by Lee Eung-bok. It stars Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-ri, Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Min jung & Byun Yo han.
The series is set in Hanseong (present day Seoul) in the early 1900s & focuses on activists fighting for Korea’s independence.
Upon it’s final broadcast, Mr Sunshine was the third highest rated series in Korean cable TV history. Last episode reached 18. 129% & the show averaged at 12.955% , the highest average rating ever recorded.
It received critical acclaim for cinematography & storytelling. Strong female characters & portrayal of the lower classes was much appreciated. It was also subject to certain amount of criticism for inaccurate representation of historical facts.
Some also accused it of being too ‘pro- Japanese’ while others argued that it actually enforced stereotypes of the Japanese as villains & the Americans as heroes.
The story is beautifully written & depicted. It grips the viewer. The cast is fabulous. The sad end does disappoint. But over all the show is good.
Lee Byung hun doesn’t disappoint. Kim Tae ri lives up to her reputation. They are known to choose off beat roles & excel. Yoo Yeon seok, my all time favourite has a nice well fleshed out role. He looks good.
Kim Min jung is beautiful & has a strong character to play. She does it with grace. Byun Yo han is brilliant. I watched these two in this show & loved them.
At the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, in 2019, it earned 8 nominations & Best Actor award for Lee Byung hun. Mr Sunshine won the Drama of the year.
At the 1st Asia Contents award & Global awards & Global OTT awards the show won award for Best Creative.
Best supporting actress was won by Kim Min jung & Best New actress by Kim Tae ri. In the 3rd Asia Artist awards Lee Byung hun, Yoo Yeon seok won awards. Both won again at 2nd Seoul Awards.
It is a beautiful experience.
