Twinkling Watermelon

It is a 2023 South Korean TV series. Directed by Son Jong hyun. It stars Ryeoun, Choi Hyun wook, Seol In ah, Shin Eun soo.

It tells the story of a CODA boy with a natural talent for music, who travels back in time to 1995. He joins a band with his childhood friends & calls it ‘Watermelon Sugar’.

The show was number 1 in 12 regions. It remained in the top five in 64 countries.

Right from the first episode it is gripping. The deaf family has one son who is able to hear & speak. His father calls him , ‘Angel’. The firs incident at their place & his music teacher at ‘Viva Music’ passing away happen on the same day.

The nuggets that the show gives us are incomparable. Leading the story & giving us an insight into poor, helpless people. The disabled have to fight for their rights & are subjected to such treatment by the society.

When the landlady declares ‘I took pity & convinced the neighbors to let you live!” Pity is not what they want, but equal status. We, as humans fail to treat some people on equal footing.

They are already at an disadvantage how low do we stoop to make them feel obliged? Why?

It brings up so many issues to the fore. Bullying happens because he is new. He has no backing & he cannot tell his parents. Being able bodied they idolise him. He has more duties than an average student. The music & the music teacher help him to bear with all the injustice inflicted.

He picks up the tunes, understands the chords but his teacher leaves before he can be appreciated.

I must have cried a bucket & I am on the threshold of the second episode. He is playing on the street for a large audience & there comes a still. No ‘what?” moment or a familiar face in the crowd.

Beautiful theme & beautiful execution.

I loved it.
