Ponyo

It is a 2008 Japanese animated fantasy film . Written & directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film stars Yuria Nara, Hiroki Doi, Tomoko Yamaguchi with others. It is the eighth film directed by Miyazaki for Ghibli Studio. It is his tenth overall.

The film tells the story of Ponyo, a goldfish who escapes from the ocean & is helped by a five year old human boy, Sosuke. After she is washed ashore while trapped in a glass jar. As they bond with each other, Ponyo desires to be a human girl, against the devastating circumstances brought about by her acquisition & use of magic.

Sosuke & his mother Lisa are waiting for his father. On top of the hill, his house is just like a lighthouse. Lisa cares for the old people in an old age home & manages a five year old boy. Ponyo’s life changes when she comes a shore.

With a human face, she tries to wriggle out of the bottle. Sosuke breaks the bottle gently with a stone, gently. Every little detail has been taken care of. When Ponyo is exhausted, she sleeps. On top of the boat & Sosuke pushing it out .. is classic. Hats off to Miyazaki . He makes us believe in miracles!!!!

A major commercial hit, grossing over $ 204 million worldwide & becoming the eighth highest grosser of all time.

Rotten Tomatoes gave it 7.6 / 10. Critics said, ‘While not Miyazaki’ s best film, Ponyo is visually stunning fairy tale that’s a sweetly poetic treat to the children & Miyazaki’ s fans of all ages’.

Ponyo was an entrant in the 65th Venice International Film Festival. There it received a special mention. In 2009, it won five awards at the 8th Annual Tokyo Anime awards.

The film won the awards for Animation of the Year & Outstanding Achievement in Music at the 32nd Japan Academy Prize.

It is a cute little film. Also Sosuke looks exactly like the boy in Miyazaki’s latest. ‘The Boy & the Heron’ We are eaderly waiting to watch it.
