Backstreet Rookie

It is a 2020 South Korean series starring Ji Chang Wook, Kim Yoo jung. It is based on the 2016 -17 webtoon ‘She’s Too much For Me’ ( Korean lit. Convenience Store Saet byul) . Written by Hwalhasan (Active Volcano).

Dae hyun is helping his parents by running a convenience store. He hires a part-timer, Saet byul. But keeps an eye on her. He has very reason to believe she is a delinquent. Once she had asked him to buy cigarettes for her.

What they don’t show earlier that he had saved her & she had always dreamed of being with him. This series has a flaw that it came across as too bold. She kissed him then as a thank you for buying cigarettes. Just when we are getting introduced to the characters, a High schooler kissing him , an unknown person on the streets!

The prologue should have all the reasons.

Later the love triangle is also a little stretched. Having a rich colleague pursuing him & competing with the part-timer wasn’t very exciting. Story of his parents, his love interest, her sister, his friend ( whom I never liked ) also Kim Min kyu wasted in a small role.

After his role in ‘Business Proposal’ we are rooting for him. He cannot be ignored. He has very little screen time.

In spite of so good cast, it never soars. Ji Chang wook in the latest ‘Welcome to Sam dal-ri’ or Kim Yoo jung in ‘My Demon’ shows they need good stories.

Surprisingly the viewership is good at 9.5 or 10.7 % for the last episode. The average at 6.3 % is not bad.

Also Kim Sun young won the Best supporting actress & Kim Yoo jung got Excellence award for Best actress. No couple award because the story did not have many couple scenes. If the man is after someone else, he can never have time to develop a bond with someone else. More than a love story it is her journey of pursuit.

Towards the end he does have her desk set up to complete her diploma. Also promotes her to a full timer. When she is awarded at the HQ, I had a vision of her getting the best award in the opening scenes of ‘My Demon’.

I felt bad my favourite actors could ‘ve given us a memorable memory! But…

After the first episode if we have a felling of let go, just go for it.
