Modest Heroes

It is a 2018 Japanese animated anthology film . Produced by Studio Ponoc. The film is the first volume in the studio’s Ponoc Short Films theater anthology & includes films written & directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, Yoshiyuki Momose & Akihiko Yamashita.

The first is ‘ Kanini & Kanino’. They are anthropomorphized fresh water crab siblings who live under water in a nearby stream. Their father , Toto, is taking care of them while their mother, Kaka, has gone away to give birth.

When they suddenly find themselves alone, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey to find their father. All the dialogues are performed in a made-up language.

Second is ‘Life Ain’t gonna Lose’. Shun Yashima is a young boy born with a lethal allergy to eggs. Every day his family tries to protect him from eggs. He has to eat special meals at school. His classmates have to take care not to spit on him. He has to take his allergy into consideration when he thinks about going on a field trip.

Alone at home, he consumes vanilla ice cream with egg in it. He informs his mother. Ambulance arrives by the time she reaches. He is brave & says, he is going to be well!

The third one is ‘Invisible’. A man struggles with not being seen by those around him.Throughout the day he is ignored. Suddenly a stranger speaks to him. It energizes him. And he gets an opportunity to become … a hero!

Watching films by Studio Ghibli in continuation, this was a change. Also the stories are so tiny! I had a good time.

The film was intended to have four segments. The fourth being directed by Ghibli director Isao Takahata. But he died on April 5, 2018. So the film was limited to three segments. How sad.

I had written the above paragraph before coming across this info.
