In 2017, ‘Keeping up with the Kandasamys’ made it’s debut. This comedy story followed an overbearing Indo- south African mother, who must put aside her differences with her rival neighbour, when their children fall in love.
Being the first South African Indian movie screened widely in cinemas, it was a huge hit & highest grossing South African movie of the year. Soon it was followed by a collection of sequels.
‘Kandasamys : The Wedding ( 2019) , ‘Trippin’ with the Kandasamys ( 2021) , ‘Kandasamys : The Baby’ ( 2023).
All four entries arepart of the same series, with events told in chronological order. Jayan Moodley is the director of all four films. Having watched the last two, you get the drift.
Alisha Authbehari, Mariam Bassa, Rory Booth, Rajesh Gopie, Jailoshini Naidoo, Maeshni Naicker, Mishqah Parhiephal, Rushil Jugtail.
After the wedding the in-laws are closer & go on a trip together. Consistent with the plot in the sequel, when they go to Mauritius to see the baby, they plan & go together. Only the new grannys don’t agree. One wants a girl & the other wants a boy! So typical.
Bringing out humour of ordinary situations, getting you teary eyed, slice of life, everything is there. People can easily empathize. But what raises them is they are able to admit their mistakes & re-concile.
No mysteries here. A good family drama.
