A Perfect Story

It is a Spanish romantic comedy TV mini series based on the novel by Elisabet Benavent. It stars Anna Castillo & Alvaro Mel. It was released on Netflix on 28 July 2023.

5 episodes take us to the unfolding of a relationship between an heiress to a hotel empire, Margot & multi-tasker David. Her two sisters, his two housemates form the supporting cast.

Margot runs away from her fairytale wedding. She meets David in a bar when she is with her two sisters. She meets him again when she comes to get her sister’s cell phone left behind. There she meets Idoia, his ex. One thing leads to another & they decide to help each other get their partners.

Joel Keller of Decider.com gave the series a positive review. ‘A light romantic story with two charming leads, which is what makes it very watchable.’ True. Greece & Madrid locales make it very watchable.

But La Vanguardia assessed that the series shows an absolute lack of respect for the romantic comedy genre. Maybe.

It could have done without a few adult scenes. I believe in a clean, calmer, chic take on love. The viewers can visualise without literally showing everything in detail.

The classic ‘broke guy meets a rich girl’ story which has two ends. It can end with them together or find someone else in life. ‘Come back, Margarita’ says his florist shop & she dumps the dried flowers she has been holding onto so far.

‘Fly, Margarita’ is his shop’s name in London when they end up together in spite of the great divide between them. That is what we would all wish for. But the novel also went along with the two options emphasizing just how our single decision can push the story in either direction.

Benavent intended us to see that it is a lot like reality, which never has a fixed ending. That is what this story makes us think.
