Bombay Rose

It is a 2019 Indian animated film. Written, edited, designed by Gitanjali Rao. It was made frame-by frame painted animation in computer. It took 18 months with 60 artists. It follows the story of a flower seller falling in love.

Bombay Rose is based on the struggle of dreams & the reality. The dream sequences are eloquent enough. But trying to cram in too many stories , jumbles the plot.

At heart a dark story, yet it can also shine brightly, dealing with heartbreak & hope… says Fionnuala of Screen International. With an average rating of 6.8 from 10 on Rotten Tomatoes, it does well.

She has a grandfather who repairs watches, her younger sister in school, a boy she frees from child labour, an old couple, a pimp who wants to lure her to Dubai. Catching up with each one is tough.

After the film is over , it leaves us wanting for more. The flower seller needed a better closure to her love story. Love between two dreamers tested by duty & religious divides. This is just one of the factors.

Geetanjali wants us to feel for the poor, humble girl but with so many characters coming in & out we get lost. For a debutant, she is good. Her effort is good but much needs to be done.

With crisp editing & a good story she can do wonders!
