Bole re Papihara…

‘Guddi’ the old Hindi movie had this iconic song by Vani Jairam. Debutant Jaya Bhaduri was appreciated & so was the singer.In 1972 Mian Tansen award for the Best film Playback singer of ‘Classical Song’ in films for ‘Bole re Papihara’ given by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai speaks volumes.

Vani Jairam born as Kalaivani , 30 November 1945 died on 4 Feb. 2023. At the age of 77 due to a fall. An Indian Playback singer in South Indian cinema.Recording over 10, 000 songs over five decades.

She has sung in 19 languages. She won the National Film Awards for Best Female Playback singer three times. In 2012, she was honoured with Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award- south for her achievements in South Indian film music. In July, she was honoured with the Best Female Singer at the NAFA 2017 event at New York City.

Padma Bhushan is to be presented. It was declared but we lost her before she received it. It is our honour to present her the highest award of our country to a civilian. It is only next to Bharat Ratna.

Lata Mangeshkar, another Indian playback singer, had left for the heavenly abode on 6th Feb. She will be completing an year. Sudha Malhotra, Suman Kalyanpur with Vani Jairam were often referred to as ‘Prati Lata’. She was iconic. Now, they are together there. The concert there must be ‘heavenly’!

May her soul rest in peace. We will forever remember her with her songs. The sweet voice which made us her fans overnight, ‘Bole re Papihara, Papihara’.
