…Goes to RRR !

‘Naatu naatu’ by MM Keeravani & Chandrabose from the Telugu film RRR have won the coveted Golden globe award for ‘Best Song- Motion Picture’. Keeravani picked the trophy on Tuesday night ceremony in California.

RRR has won many a hearts along the way. For example, the spontaneous ‘Dance party’ erupted during a screening of the film at LA’a storied Chineses theatre, when ‘Naatu, naatu’ came on. ( A very common feature for Indian films in our theatres!)

Also the tickets sold out within 98 seconds! Solid!! Of course, many factors have contributed to RRR’s success. First, the Covid era, when audience was reluctant to go to the theatres. RRR provided spectacular action scenes & sets.

Second, vigour & technical virtuosity of world class action cinema with a strong emotional core. This is the base of almost all South Indian movies.

Third is the political moment of a more honest reckoning with imperialism & slave trade. The two characters are real. But their meeting each other is totally fictional. It provided with great drama.

Fourth is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which organises the awards.

Has it really been a new beginning remains to be seen. But it is a necessary boost to all the incoming films. A greater confidence in the quality of films being made today.Rajamouli has already won the New York Critics Circle award for Best Director this year- a win for RRR at the Academy Awards in March would further shore up Indian cinema’s global aspirations.

Not the award but the recognition that comes with it is more desirable. It’s just beginning!
