Suicide

I came across this word in 1975. I vividly remember Dharmendra atop a water storage tank with a bottle in his hand. Shouting on top of his lungs ‘suicide’! He planned to jump from there if Hema’s Massi did not allow their marriage. All agitated & asking her to give him the girl’s hand. Only cool one was Jay aka Amitabh Bachchan who said, ‘Daru utar gayo toh niche ayega’.

Being a school kid it remained with me because I couldn’t fathom how people have courage to kill themselves. Later the newspapers would report a husband killing his wife with children. Money would be the issue. Poverty or the loan would be the culprit. Farmers would commit suicide for being in a fix. The moody monsoon & the high costs would take toll.

The Jagtap couple in Nasik left a note saying they have no money & are being harassed by the money lenders. The couple was so young. Again it makes us think if we should learn to live within our resources. If we should live frugally, save & spend within our means.

Has the gap between aspirations & income become so wide that our dreams cannot accept reality? Being Ambani or Bill Gates is not everybody’s cup of tea. Nor the dreams of a big house, car, lavish life style for everyone.

But it can be dreamed of & worked on gradually. Only patience is the key. Have we lost it? Have we become so impatient that breaking the rules has become the norm? We can observe at the traffic signal or in any queue. It shows how people generally think!

We have definitely brought in on ourselves. Needs to be corrected. With Patience! Only meditation will not help. Practicing it will!
