Made on a budget of $ 40 million it made $177.8 million.Getting mixed reviews by the critics it got two & a half stars out of four by Roger Ebert. Ashley Judd won Favourite actress at the 6th Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.
Nick & Libby Parsons are wealthy residents of Whidbey Island, Washington. They go sailing on a weekend, leaving their four year old son with Angela, Libby’s friend. Nick goes missing. Blood stained knife is found but no body.
Libby is charged for murdering her husband & goes to prison. When Angela’s visits cease she tries to track down & finds her husband is alive. She gets paroled for good behaviour. She decides to kill Nick.
After Michelle Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan & Brooke Shields declined the role, Jodie Foster was s attached to star in the film as Libby Parsons. But she wanted to do it her way. Finally it went to Ashley Judd.
Misinterpretation of the concept of double jeopardy in the film did no damage. Libby would have been acquitted for having a shot at Nick in self defense. He would have killed Lehman or both Lehman & Libby in that scene.
Meeting her son Matt became her mission. That scene is heart wrenching.
