I have seen this title since ages. In the cupboard in my house I had this thick book . I wondered if it was a fantasy. Later as I read it the picture of Calcutta became clear. Today when Dominique Lapierre is no more, it becomes more relevant. His vision becomes more clear for us.
The article in Indian Express says he had generosity of spirit, born of knowledge that the only thing worth holding on to is compassion! “City Of Joy” chronicles the lives of the city’s poor & those working towards their rehabilitation. It does not highlight the plight of the poor to be ridiculed. It is a true picture painted with compassion.
The French writer presented Mother Teresa with a cheque of $ 50, 000, confessed it was but ‘a drop in the ocean of need’. ‘City of Joy’, Freedom at Midnight’ & Five past midnight in Bhopal’ are affirmation of his life’s purpose. He needed work towards remedying the injustice in his narratives. The writer passed away on Sunday at 91. He was also known for his philanthropic work in India.
One of those who lived & loved this country like Ruskin Bond or Tom Alter. I have been in awe of these people since my childhood. Mother Teresa who came here & served the needy, selflessly.
The world will be in debt of his thoughts and writings. The man who gave us the ‘City Of Joy’! It was there. right in front of our eyes & we did not know it, till he came. Salute.
