Indian Matchmaking

The 2020 reality show ended with a hope for season 2. Whether the couples really tied the knot remained the real question. But all the participants became stars overnight for sure.

The concept is simple. Matchmaker Sima Taparia guides clients in US & India in the arranged marriage process. It offers an inside look at the custom in today’s world. Setting up of the couple has been done for ages. The parents or elders in the family decided & the boy or the girl had no say in the matter.

Later the boy came over. The family met him formally. A dish of ‘kande pohe’ would be offered. With tea round of talks decided whether to meet again or call it quits. The girl came bearing the tray & sat for a while in the hall & was later sent in. She did not participate in the talks.

Sometimes her opinion would be asked but usually the parents decided if the boy was ‘suitable’!The parents being mature & experienced, seen ‘so many rainy seasons’ were the best judge.

To go against their wishes meant a tussle forever. To have a ‘love marriage’ was considered ‘forward’. Also the pair was subjected to glances! Today we find many opting for it. Also the world has become an oyster. With job opportunities come exposure & interaction with more people.

Adjustment is the inherent ingredient in marriage or any commitment. Today’s couple have choices & self employment. ‘Why do we need marriage for stability?’ Japan or South Korea go for late marriages. No marriages also.

Late marriage or divorce were common in the western countries. Today it is common all over. The society, the norms are changing. So are the values & virtues. There is no right or wrong. But it is changing the way we think, for sure.
