Maya

A Royal stag Barrel select short large film. It stars Padmapriya, Abir Chatterjee with others. A love story ensues over a series of phone calls. The pianist learning the instrument by his master falls for his daughter. She is outgoing & very charming. IIM graduate she is into pottery.

As she handles some wrong numbers he watches her. At home he opens an old suitcase. It has a coat, muffler & a cap. With a cigarette dangling at the corner of his lips he is the perfect charmer. He recites poetry & talks without a care.

On a rainy night she confides in him that she has fallen for a stranger. She has not seen him. But he talks so well on the phone. I know only his number. Under an umbrella as he looks at her, we expect him to say something. He doesn’t.

At home he wraps up the old clothes & puts the suitcase on top of the cupboard, out of the way. The adventure is over. Why did he behave in this way? Did she recognise his voice? Did she make the first move? The mystery remains. We are left to our own thoughts.

Re visiting it meant, the end was known. Yet it remains the same mystery. We cannot suddenly think out of the box. We keep on thinking of ways where the story will have a conclusive end or a hint somewhere…

It is Maya! An illusion. Our fantasy!!
